Part I

Healing Day of Remembrance

An all-ages event created by youth to honor our community’s losses and recovery from the Table Mesa (King Soopers) tragedy last March 2021.
On Saturday, April 2, Growing Up Boulder hosted a youth-led "healing" event to mark one year since the March 2021 Table Mesa tragedy at King Soopers (#boulderstrong).  This event - held at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMOCA) - was organized by Growing Up Boulder's Youth Leadership Healing Committee (YLHC) and offered opportunities for community members of all ages to heal from this tragedy through art, writing, and community connection.

The YLHC - made up of diverse, dedicated high school students - is organized and supported by Growing Up Boulder, Mayamotion Healing, and the University of Colorado’s Renee Crown Wellness Institute and is funded by the Community Foundation Boulder County’s Boulder County Crisis Fund. Through the spring of 2022, these students brought a full range of emotions, perspectives, ideas and energy to planning this event. Their commitment to our community’s resilience is reflected in the meaningful set of activities made available to anyone in need of healing from this painful tragedy.

In August 2022,
GUB staff turned the Healing Day of Remembrance activities into a Healing Toolkit for the use of GUB partners, the Boulder community, and other cities who have experienced a mass shooting tragedy and can benefit from the students’ healing activities.  For more information on the Healing Toolkit, we invite you to contact us.

Healing Exhibit at the Museum of Boulder

In June and July 2022, Growing Up Boulder and Mayamotion Healing (MMH) hosted a Healing Exhibit at the Museum of Boulder’s Google Garage.

The Healing Exhibit was a continuation of the Healing Day of Remembrance and hosted the youth's healing activities to continue to support healing for the King Soopers Tragedy and other hardships such as wildfires, social injustices, and impacts of Covid.

Part II:

Healing in Collective & Healing Toolkit Training Series

The Youth Leadership Healing Committee (YLHC) is reconvening in the fall of 2022 to continue to explore the role of healing within the community in response to the tragedy of King Soopers. Part I of the cohort focused mainly on the planning, processing and implementation of a Healing Day of Remembrance event. Part II will offer a continuation of healing and processing the tragic event itself, as well as exploring future opportunities for community and youth-informed programming, including the implementation of Healing Toolkits.

Part II: Healing in Collective & Healing Toolkit Training Series' objectives include:
  1. Continuing healing in the community.
  2. Grounding in and becoming familiar with the Healing Toolkit.
  3. Identifying and connecting with potential toolkit engagement groups.
  4. Facilitating Healing Toolkit sessions with peers, teachers, adult allies & the community.
  5. Collecting data and reporting back for data analysis.

Healing Toolkit

Healing Toolkit: Created by youth for youth

We invite teachers, mental health professionals, and student leaders to use our youth-developed, teacher-&-therapist-approved “Healing Kit” to help children and youth heal from the traumas of the past few years. The kit can be used in pieces or in its entirety, taking between 15 minutes to several hours to utilize. It aligns with Colorado Academic Health Standard #4, “ Utilize knowledge and skills to enhance mental, emotional, and social well-being.” This bilingual, culturally responsive toolkit, funded by the Community Foundation Boulder County, is appropriate for ages 5-18 and contains no triggering words. It was developed by 21 area high school students, Growing Up Boulder, and Mayamotion Healing in response to the King Soopers tragedy.
